Faculty Positions Terrestrial/Space Systems Engineering The School of Earth and Space Exploration and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at Arizona State University invite applications for up to two joint tenured or tenure-track position at the Full or Associate Professor level in terrestrial/space systems engineering. ASU’s new School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) seeks to create an environment in which science and engineering students are integrated throughout their undergraduate years and participate at the senior and graduate level in complex, 1-2 year long modular projects with both science and engineering components. SESE will bring together natural science and engineering students into working teams and prepare students in both their core disciplines and in their ability to participate in high-level, transdisciplinary exploration projects. The successful faculty applicant will be expected to provide leadership and develop collaborations in terrestrial and/or space systems engineering by interacting with and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, teaching graduate and undergraduate classes in related areas, developing and sustaining a core research program, and performing international, national, and local service. Research areas may include mission analysis and design, robotic vehicles, operation in extreme environments, system dynamics and control, morphing/adaptive systems, and integrated systems engineering. Required qualifications are a Ph.D. in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline; demonstrated accomplishments in research, teaching, and service commensurate with the position of either Full or Associate Professor; and potential to develop and sustain major mission-related research. Desired qualifications include the demonstrated ability to establish and implement research projects that bridge traditional science and engineering boundaries; the ability to facilitate interaction among students from a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines in a project-based learning environment, implementation experience with terrestrial or planetary exploration missions; a record of industry, national lab, NASA, Department of Defense, or Department of Energy experience or interactions; and evidence of ability to attract major research funding. The selected candidate will collaborate in research and teaching with faculty in both SESE and MAE. Review of materials will begin January 9, 2006; if not filled, then every two weeks thereafter until the search is closed.
